A few years ago I decided to look for an explanation of our human condition that I could translate into images. I was seeking a framework to explore the persistence of cruelty and violence in our world I settled on the Greek Myth of Pandora who was the first goddess to appear in human form, sent by Gaia, "Mother Earth".

The ancient Greek scholar Hesiod wrote that Pandora brought us an earthenware jar filled with evil. But I discovered modern interpretations of the myth by Charlene Spretnak, Christine Downing and Joseph Campbell who maintain that Pandora, whose name means "Giver of all Gifts", brought us all of our humanity" those skills and qualities of mind and heart we cherish as well as those that have caused us so much grief.

I have tried not to set up dichotomies but to be even handed regarding our humanity, including our achievements, our failures, and our strengths.

This perspective on an old story is my own. If it is our fate to struggle endlessly with our human nature, may we find solace in the final gift to come from Pandora's jar: the seed of hope.
